What programming language should an aspiring web developer learn first?

My previous programming experience was years ago with Visual Basic 6. I’d like to get back into programming, specifically creating web applications. Which language would you recommend I learn first and why?

I think PHP and HTML are good to know because they’re universal languages and useful for what you’re trying to do.
